Application Instructions

If you  have questions about your application, please contact:


  • Only United States citizens or permanent residents are eligible for USDA NIFA funds in this program. Non-US citizens, especially Cornell CALS students, may be eligible for funding from other sources.
  • The submission deadline for all application related material is February 3, 2019
  • Academic reference letters are due by: February 10, 2019
  • Acceptance notifications will be issued by early March 2019

​If you apply to more than one program – Entomology, Horticulture, Plant Pathology/Plant-Microbe Biology – you must complete the entire application process for each program. 

What you need to submit:

  1. Application Application Form submitted online. Deadline February 3, 2019. 
     
  2. Official Transcript, mailed or by secure electronic delivery (if mailed, postmarked by February 3, 2019) to:

  3. Waiver of Inspection to Academic Reference Letters.  
    Please fill out the Waiver of Inspection Form section on the main application (see step 1) for each of the two people who will provide letters of reference.
     
  4. Two Academic Reference Letters submitted online.  
    These reference letters should be from professors who know you well and who can evaluate your ability, experience, and potential.  Each reference letter needs to be completed and submitted using the online Academic Reference Form.  You should assume responsibility to follow up with your professors to know that materials have been submitted.
    Academic reference letters are due by: February 10, 2019
     
  5. Personal Statement submitted online by February 3, 2019.  
    Please provide a Personal Statement (single spaced and limited to 4200 characters/spaces) addressing each of the following (it is suggested that you prepare the text in in a Word document, then copy and paste it into the online form):
    • Describe your personal career goals and objectives
    • Your reasons for wanting to participate in the Summer Scholars program
    • Your previous research experience and acquired skills
